HIAWASSEE - 227 athletes from across the Southeastern United States gatheredatthe Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds this weekend to swim, bike, and run their way to victory in the Summer Sizzler International and Sprint Distance Triathlons.

The longer International Triathlon saw a large group of 104 athletes compete on a beautiful Saturday morning. The triathlon was a loopcourse consisting of a .8 mile swim in the waters of Lake Chatuge, a 23 mile road bicycle course around the lake, and finally a four mile run. The overall winner of the triathlon was 20 year-old Anthony Wallace with a total time of 1 hour 47 minutes and 32 seconds. Rounding out the top three were Ashley Folkes (1:49:08) and Mark Swiecichowski (1:54:37).

On Sunday morning an even larger group of

123 athletes tackled the slightly shorter Sprint Distance Triathlon. Like the International Triathlon, the Sprint Distance course was a loop-course. However, the swim was .4 miles long, the bicycle course 13 miles in length, and the run a distance of 3 miles. The overall winner of the Sprint Distance course

was Trey Prophater with a total time of 1 hour and 26 seconds. Following Prophater, in second and third place, were Gary Rother (1:02:23) and Zach Tyler (1:05:37) respectively.

The triathlons were hosted and organized by the Great Smoky Mountains Triathlon Club, an organization founded by local race director Scott Hanna. The Summer Sizzler's are only two of 11 events put on by the club each year. The next events will be the 8th Annual Oktoberfest International and Sprint Distance Triathlons, taking place on September 22 and 23 respectively.
