Back to the basics
Faculty and students prepare for start of new school year
MARCUS KEELY Sentinel Writer

Students set those alarm clocks. With less than fivedays of vacation remaining, the summer luxury of sleeping-in will soon be replaced by the early-to-rise routine of the academic year. So get ready to roll out of bed, eat your Wheaties and get to class. It's that time of year again.

Monday, August 27 marks the officialfirstday of classes, but preparation for the new school year has been in the works the entire summer. Almost immediately after the end of exams this past Spring, construction began on a new addition to the middle school gymnasium (see GYM article, 1A) which will house larger bathrooms, an expanded weight room, and officesfor middle school physical education instructors. To house the ever-growing elementary enrollment, two new mobile classrooms have been installed on campus. In addition, carpets have been placed in the elementary building and removed/replaced throughout the high school.

Faculty arrived back on campus Monday, August 20 to prepare for the start of school. They were treated out to breakfast at Brasstown Valley Resort as a welcoming gesture and as a time to regroup before the start of a busy week in which classrooms will be arranged and organized in anticipation of students.

Not only will teachers be gearing up for school this week. Various student orientations and open houses have been scheduled later in the week to ease the transition into the new academic year. On Thursday, Aug. 23, Hayesville Elementary School will be hosting "Meet the Teachers" from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Rising seventh grade students also will have an open house on Thursday to introduce parents to the seventh grade writing requirements. High school freshman will similarly have the opportunity to meet the faculty of Hayesville High School at a Freshman Open House scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 23.

In comparison to athletic preparations, the academic year is the slow starter. Coaches and athletes of fall sports have been practicing over the summer to get in condition for the beginning of the season. The first football scrimmages have already taken place, the volleyball team had its first game of the season against Swain on Tuesday, the cross country teams will travel to Swain for their first meet on Wednesday, Aug. 29, and the soccer team will take on Murphy at home on September 10.

With so much going on, summer seems to already be slipping away as the new school year brings much anticipation and promise. If only it were easier to wake up in the morning...
