Good to be an American
From the porch
By Dwight Otwell

On August 8, a group of people cheered and waved American flags as Marine Sgt. Justin Jenson stepped onto a scorching sidewalk in front of the First United Methodist Church in Murphy.

Jenson was about to go to Iraq for his second tour of duty there. It was an outpouring of love, support and thankfulness for the men and women who serve in the armed forces of the United States.

More than a year ago, I was at the Atlanta Airport waiting for a flight when a group of soldiers deboarded a plane. Some were coming home for a visit - some were on their way to military bases for training. Most had either served or were scheduled to serve in the hot spots in the Middle East.

Several people began to clap and cheer for the troops as they emerged from their deboarding area. It was a spontaneous reaction from the crowd. More people began to converge on the area and a line was formed for the troops. Whenever a group or a single military person emerged, the crowd applauded and cheered.

It was one of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen - even more so because there was no planning for it, no one was urged to take part - it just happened.

My step-daughter DeEtte is in the U.S. Navy and is a member of a Special Mobile Forces unit. She has served in one dangerous mission off the shores of Iraq and Iran. She may be headed for another perilous assignment.

It is good to see that there are still so many patriotic Americans. I think there are many more than most people realize. Supporting and being thankful for the troops doesn't mean that we have to agree with everything they are ordered to do. We can disagree with foreign policy and still throw our wholehearted support behind those who serve our country.

Everyday, we need to remember all of our soldiers and their families and thank God for them and their sacrifices. We may be a quarrelsome people but we have always come together in tough situations and it is still good to be an American.
