ArtWorks is located on Big Sky Drive, above the Holiday Inn Express in Hiawassee. 50's Dance Everyone is welcome to attend a 50's dinner and dance sponsored by the Cast Away Critters Pet Rescue. To be held on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Ramada Inn in Hiawassee at 6 p.m. for social hour. Bring your own bottle and setups available followed by dinner and the fabulous Flashbacks 50s Band playing until 10 p.m. Cost is $25 per person, and reservations may be made by calling (706) 896-6327. There will be silent and live auctions, a raffle for a quilt and a 50/50 raffle. Seating is limited so call now. Dinner is Served at Stecoah Valley Center Authentic Appalachian dinners are being served every Saturday evening from June 30 - September 1st prior to each "An Appalachian Evening" concert. The dining room is open to the public and concert attendance is not required, although, dinner and a show is a real treat. Entrees will vary from week to week but will include one of the following; country fried steak, meat loaf, fried chicken, ham & country ham or pork chops. Sides items may include, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, macaroni & cheese, roasted red potatoes, glazed carrots, green beans, squash & onions, cabbage, fried okra, cream style corn, butter beans and other fresh vegetables. All dinners are served with fresh cornbread, biscuits, spiced apples and fresh cucumber, tomato & onion salad. Homemade desserts will also be available. The dinners are served at two seatings - 5:30 & 6:30pm in the new dining room at Stecoah Valley Center. Entrees are $12 per adult, $9 per student and $6 per child. Reservations are required. Poetry Workshop North Carolina Writers' Network West invites all local writers to come to a one day workshop with Maureen Ryan Griffin, writer of poetry and prose at the Senior Center in Hayesville, NC on September 1. She teaches a week long class each year at the John C. Campbell Folk School and recently published Spinning Words into Gold, a must for any serious writer's bookshelf. SEPTEMBER The Curiosity Shop Local artist, Penny Johnson will be the featured artist July 23 - September 4 at The Curiosity Shop located in The Shoppes Of Murphy, downtown Murphy. Penny is a watercolorist painting portraits and local landscapes. Misty mountains, waterfalls and lake scenes are some of her favorite inspirations. Her original works and some prints will be on exhibit. Nature & Acryllcs Learn to paint animals, landscapes and still-life. Create a "Welcome" sign as your first project and then explore! "If it doesn't move, paint it!" The instructor for the class will be Susanne Ksinski. A minimum of six students is required. The class, sponsored by the Tri-County Community College, will take place at the Clay County Senior Center from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Thursdays from September 6 thru October 25. The cost is $45. Meeting The September meeting of the DAR Chapter will be held at The Old Hiawassee Grille Fireplace Room in Hiawassee, GA on Saturday, September 8 at 10:15 AM. Luncheon cost is $11.00. A Country Fare A Country Fare will take place on the grounds of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd Saturday, September 8 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. A silent auction will be held Friday, September 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. Guardian ad Litem A new training class for Guardian ad Litem Volunteers will begin on September 10. Class will be held on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Senior Center, across from the library in Murphy. Expo & Job Fair The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Tri- County Community College and NC Job Link, is making plans for the Sixth Business Expo & Job Fair on Sept. 14 and 15, 2007, on the campus of Tri-County Community College in Peachtree, Cherokee County, NC. The expo and job fair will open Friday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ninth-grade students in Cherokee and Clay counties schools and from 4 to 8 p.m. to the general public. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Letters and applications have been mailed to chamber members and industry representatives. By combining the Expo/Job Fair, the organizing committee is bringing a bigger and better event to the community, looking for larger crowds and offering participating businesses a larger venue to showcase products, services and employment opportunities. Witness Production The Licklog Players will be performing Agatha Christie's "Witness for the Prosecution" September 14-16 & 21-23 at the Peacock Playhouse in Hayesville. The show, directed by Dan Norton, is rated PG. Personalized Book Sale "Friends of the Library" is sponsoring a one day opportunity for you to purchase a personalized children's book on Saturday, September 15 at 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Moss Library in Hayesville. Cash or checks only will be accepted, no credit cards please. Each book includes the child's name and hometown, the names of child's friends and a message from you. MOAA Picnic cancelled Due to the lack of water in the lake, it was decided at the August 20th MOAA meeting to cancel the September 17 boat picnic. We want to thank all those who volunteered their boats and also those who helped in the planning of this event. The September 17 meeting will take place at a North Carolina restaurant with information to be sent later. An outdoor picnic is being planned for October and all will be advised as soon as arrangements are made. Diabetes Classes The next diabetes class will be held on Wednesday September 19 and again on October 3 at 4 p.m. Barefoot Auditions Auditions for the Licklog Players production of Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park" will be September 22-24 at the Peacock Playhouse in Hayesville. The farce, directed by Laurel Adams, is rated PG. COMING UP Fall Festival Fall Festival at the John C. Campbell Folk School will be October 6-7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Brasstown. Crafts, dancing and music in addition to food and games make it a fun experience. Quilt Show Planned The Misty Mountain Quilt Guild of Georgia/North Carolina will have their bi-annual quilt show Oct. 12-13 at North Georgia Technical School in Blairsville, Ga. There will also be a silent auction of mini-quilts. The drawing for a king-size quilts, "Stars Over Georgia," will be held on the last day of the show.
