Off to a Good Start
The first day in temporary classrooms
CARLA OWENS Sentinel Writer

Kindergarten Teacher Mrs. Denise Lunsford helps some of her little "Muppets" get ready to go home on Monday after their first day of school. Lunsford and fiveother Kindergarten teachers at HES have the privilege of teaching the largest group of Kindergartners in the school's history.
Dedicated veteran Kindergarten teacher Janice Harburn worked late into the evening Monday setting up her new classroom which will be housed in one of two mobile classroom units. The units did not arrive early enough to have them ready for the first day of school which was Monday, but electricians were hard at work earlier in the day Monday trying to get power to the mobile classrooms so that Harburn's "Little Critter's" can hopefully move in next week. However, Harburn did not have electricity Monday evening as she worked in the August heat without air conditioning preparing her classroom to welcome her 19 new students.

Kindergarten students come on a staggard schedule with only fivestudents from each of the six classes reporting each day during the first week of school. So, HES Principal Matt Rogers said he believes that the units will be ready by the beginning of next week when all the kindergartners show up together for the first time on Tuesday. Two kindergarten classes will be housed in the units which have been placed in the grassy area outside the current first grade and Kindergarten buildings.

Hayesville Elementary School's average daily attendance has risen for the past fiveyears and this year's early enrollment numbers show yet another increase, with almost 600 students showing up for the first day of school. Principal Rogers said that firmfigures will be available the 10th day of school when the system automatically drops "no-shows" from the rolls. The enrollment at the elementary school includes all students between Pre-K and 4th grade.

For the first time ever, HES has six Kindergarten classes and five2nd grade classes. Also for the first time ever, HES has fivepre-school classes - the largest pre-school enrollment ever. A sign of things to come, according to school officials, who say the question of a new school to house the ever increasing student body is no longer a question of "if" but "when."
