Rollins Planetarium Presents the Virtual Adventure Blown Away
Blown Away: The Wild World of Weather gives audiences an incredible look at the weather of our planet Earth in all its many forms. Using the immersive environment of the planetarium and featuring on-screen meteorologists, the audience not only finds out fascinating facts about weather, but also experiences them, including a thunderstorm with real rain! Blown Away will be presented on the following Friday evenings: August 24 and September 7, 14 and 28. During the show, audience members explore the weather by journeying into space to examine the effect the Sun has on our atmosphere, swimming with a water droplet to examine the water cycle, and venturing into the "weather kitchen" to findout the ingredients necessary to brew up a thunderstorm. Many exciting special effect sequences put the audience into the action by flying into a tornado, riding out a hurricane, and investigating why a lightning bolt is hotter than the surface of the Sun."Blown Away: The Wild World of Weather is a great way to learn about what causes the weather phenomena we experience every day. The visual magic of Rollins Planetarium, combined with the on-screen knowledge from meteorologists, makes this show a great experience for the entire family," said Steve Morgan, planetarium director and astronomy professor at the college. Planetarium programs start promptly at 8:00 p.m. Seating begins about 10 minutes before showtime. The planetarium is located in the Maxwell Center building on the campus of Young Harris College. There is no admission charge. If skies are clear, the Young Harris College Observatory is open immediately after the planetarium show ends, which should be about 8:45. The bright planet Jupiter currently dominates the early evening sky and will be a prime target for observing. The session will also include a guided tour of the constellations. The observatory features a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, and is located about a mile-and-a-half from campus on the grounds of the Brasstown Valley Resort. Maps are available in the planetarium lobby if needed. The session will end between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. The observatory is open on the same dates the planetarium is open.
