Highland games to involve youth venue The 2007 edition of the Appalachian Highland Games and Festival of Scots that will be held Saturday September 8 at the Andrews Recreation Park will once again offer "youth games" for children and teens. "Last year we invited the partners from Christ Community Church to oversee a youth athletics venue," said Glenn Tatum, a member of the Appalachian Highland Games, Inc. Board of Directors and Chair of the publicity committee. "We know this local church has a vision of recreational community service since they have provided free activities and games at the Andrews Recreation park during our Fourth of July celebration. So they were the natural ones to ask." Tatum said more than 40 youngsters participated in 2006. Since sanctioned heavy athletics are a large part of the annual Appalachian Highland Games, Tatum said the young people can try "turning the caber, putting the stone and tossing the sheaf. "We want the younger people to come out and get a feel for the unique sports competition they would experience in the Highlands," said Tatum. "We will have parental permission slips available at the gate for any young person who wants to give it a try." Tatum said the gates will open at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning and the performances and demonstrations will begin soon after. He said activities will be non-stop until 5:00 p.m. "Our festival has grown each year and once again we have planned a day filled with music, games, crafts and heavy athletics," said Tatum. General admission is seven ($7) dollars per person. Children under 12 will be admitted free. According to Iain Black, the festival will be a "celebration of all things Scottish with an emphasis on heavy athletics." There will be dancing demonstrations, a heritage tent, delectable food, vendors, sheep herding, youth athletic events and the gathering of the Clans. Included in the athletic competition will be the Scottish Hammer Throw, Turning the Caber, Weight Throws, Putting the Stone and more.
