LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Response to a letter from Mr. C.,

LTC U.S. Army

Mr. C. believes that I'm grossly misinformed, ignorant, in denial on many issues and that the limited space will only allow for a condensation of my "rant" and provide answers "for me and others who share my views." He calls my comments about Bush and Cheney disrespectful, i.e., verbal thuggery.. Bush, et. al. have killed and wounded many thousands and still, with the help of a selfishand spineless Congress, the needless carnage continues. Words that would properly describe this destructive and criminal behavior are unfitto print. Bush / Cheney invaded Iraq by deceit and lies, via the fear generated by 9 / 11, unprepared and totally unaware of what was to follow. So naive and uniformed were they, that Bush appeared under a banner that read MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

14 large bases and an Embassy the size of the Vatican are being constructed. Does this sound like liberation ? This is a classic corporate "war" ( police action ) without end in the midst of civil unrest. It's a criminal attempt to establish a permanent foothold in the oil rich Mid- East.

Along with the open borders and the war, it's long past time to be rid of the most destructive President ... EVER ! Most of the 9 / 11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. After a belated token response to Afghan, bin laden's home, Bush invades Iraq. Mr. C. points out that bin Laden declared war on America in 1996. Why then would Bush allow him to escape from Toro Borro ? Why does Bush now say that he doesn't know where he is and doesn't spend that much time on em' ?

Mr. C. : "Once war is declared we must fight to win or lose." 9 generals say there is no military victory possible in Iraq. Mr. C. indicates that he would join the Surge. I say, words are cheap. The Surge is Bush's way of buying time because he doesn't have the guts, the intelligence or the character to admit that he is wrong.

As a reader of the Sentinel advised, after reading Mr. C's message : Perhaps you should tell him ( Mr. C's ) that if his stupidity is representative of our military leaders, it is small wonder that 160,000 of the "best trained military in the world" can't seem to defeat 3,000 rag-tag insurgents. Mr. Robert

The Community:

I would like to thank everyone for your support, prayers and letter during my recovery from burns sustained in a plane crash back in April.

You can't imagine how much strength it gave me during tough times. I have now been back in Murphy for a couple of weeks and with the assistance of Drs. Meineke and Doan have started working again. I look forward to serving you and expressing my appreciation in person when I can.

Larry Opoliner, M.M.C. Surgeon

Senator Chambliss:

Thank you for the generic reply... I look forward to a more specific reply at your convenience. Keep up the great work. But please realize that I-3 through the gorgeous mountains of Georgia is a very bad idea, extremely shortsighted and I think it will surely cost you re-election if you do not reconsider. Believe me, a lot of people are hopping mad about this. I am a hard core Reagan/Bush Republican and vote straight Republican as long as I can remember. However, I did jump party lines and voted for Democrat Broun who ran against Republican Whitehead simply because Broun seems sincere on his position to not only stop I-3 but even the expensive wasteful study where those funds could go to important needs such as highway/bridge infrastructure improvements and repairs to avoid more tragedies like what happened in Minnesota and the Iraqi war on terrorism. I know you have taken a hard position on this and you may think you will lose face, but there is nothing wrong and it is even admirable and demonstrates courage to reconsider and change your mind especially in the light of the current situation we findour country in (fighting a very expensive war that will not end soon), and the realization that the proposed route for I-3 through the mountains would certainly cost many many times more than other options that include less difficultterrain with much less rock and not involve pristine waterways with sensitive ecosystems and where other roadways already exist that could be used for the I-3 project that would be much more accommodating and helpful to those local economies that need improved roadways. Remember we are just south of the Smoky Mountains, which is the most heavily visited park in the US. Damage to our mountains will certainly have a negative ripple effect on the Smokies and the entire Appalachian area whose economy depends on this heavy tourism traffic.

I appreciate the venue to express my concerns, and thank you for your service to our country. Regards … Dr. Hilty Burr
