Artisan of the month

Quilting has a long and interesting history. Quilts have taken many forms and served many purposes. Some were made to keep a family warm, some to commemorate a special occasion, others for decoration and still others just for fun. Some quilts follow traditional patterns and others are contemporary "art" quilts. But underlying them all is the creative expression of the people who design and make them.

Rena Magolnick became interested in quilting when she happened to pass by a quilt shop and was amazed by the quilts on display. A beginner's class was starting soon and she immediately signed up. That was in 1998, the same year that Rena and her Husband, Bob Hustead, bought their land here in Graham County. Rena has quilted, time permitting, since then and has taken many classes to expand her skills and learn new techniques. Rena now teaches others to quilt and thoroughly enjoys it.

The colors and patterns present in nature provide inspiration to Rena and she feels fortunate to be able to split her time between Everglades City, Florida and Graham County. Rena's selection of fabrics is influenced by Mother Nature's color palette. She particularly loves the clear, pure colors found in the sea, sky and tropical foliage of south Florida, as well as those of the forests, flowers and mountains of western North Carolina.

The Stecoah Artisans Guild is excited to have some of Rena's quilts on display and for sale in the Stecoah Valley Artisan Gallery. Stop by and see these wonderful masterpieces for yourself; you may have the same spark Rena experienced and take up the art of quilting. Beginning in September, Stecoah Valley Center will be offering a quilting class with Rena as the instructor. Watch the local newspaper for class dates and times. Stecoah Valley Center and Stecoah Valley Artisans Gallery are located at 121 Schoolhouse Road in the Stecoah Community. Call 828-479-3364 for directions or more information.
