The Miracle of Brasstown Valley

Governor of Georgia returns to his roots in his seventh book, The Miracle of Brasstown Valley, the North Georgia native returned to his home in Brasstown Valley after a lifetime of politics, teaching, speaking and writing. As a young lad Born and reared in the shadow of Young Harris College, Miller spent time sitting spellbound on the "loafer's benches" of the area listening to old-timers spin tales of how things used to be. Many of those who contributed to the book did so unwittingly, for the young lad remembered their stories and used them as part of his research for this book on the roots of Young Harris College.

The Miracle of Brasstown Valley is the story of the miraculous creation of Young Harris College in remote Brasstown Valley, Georgia at the turn of the 19th century. The captivating characters who made it happen are the young Methodist circuit rider filled with the faith and a dream; a wise, soft-spoken widow who breathed life into the infant school twice; a wealthy Methodist layman whose generosity for Christian education caused his kin to sue him so they wouldn't feel left out; and a Shakespearean scholar and college president who was more at home in the fields than anywhere else. A group with diverse talents and backgrounds, all with important roles to play in bringing the dream of Artemas Lester to life.

Miller has done a wonderful job with this book; it is local history presented in an entertaining storytelling style. It makes a wonderful addition to your local history bookshelf. Jerry Taylor, who Miller refers to as the premier Towns County historian, calls the book delightful reading and says he was very glad the history has been preserved for the generations to come.

Phillips & Lloyd Book Shop on the Square in Hayesville will host Zell Miller on Saturday, September 15th from 10 to 12 for a book signing for The Miracle of Brasstown Valley. Please call 828-389-1492 for more information or to reserve copies of his books.
