Students going to Denmark With globalization here, HHS students are joining in to learn more about this diverse world. The high school's Principal Dr. Gail Criss and English teacher Linda Barrett ventured to Copenhagen in the fall of 2006 and came back with plans for an exchange program with a sister school, Avedore Gymnasium. This is now a reality. With my love for travel, and the magnitude globalization has on today's society, I seized the opportunity to take a leadership position and make the Globalization of Hayesville High School my senior exiting project. On our weeklong exchange program we will be staying with families of students and getting to experience the Danish culture by attending school and cultural events. Although we are staying with host families, airline tickets and the dollar's loss of value have made it necessary to seek funding from our community. As part of our fundraising we have created Stinger Cards, which provide discounts at local businesses. The following businesses have graciously provided discounts for this card: Hayesville Family Restaurant, Fun World, Hayesville Firestone, Casa Anguelos Cuban Café, Mountain Valley Country Store, Kenneco Computers, Papa's Pizza of Hiawassee, Michaelee's Chocolate Caffe, Tigers, El Alazan, Phillips and Lloyd Book Shop and Crumpets Dessertery, Mary's Southern Grill, and The Copper Door Restaurant and Café. Thank these businesses at every opportunity for supporting their local school system. Additionally, the following have given donations to help fund our travel: Nantahala Bank, The Paint Bucket, The Corner Butcher Shop, Computer Connection, Spin Lite of Hiawassee. I would especially like to recognize Timberlake Builders and Barrett and Associates Insurance Agency for their $500 donations, as well as Mountain Graphics Printing for donating the Stinger Cards. If you have not been contacted by a student and would like to take part in helping us gain cultural knowledge through this trip, donations are still being accepted, and checks can be made out to Hayesville High School. Other contributions can be made by dining at Mary's Southern Grill on September 21 from 4-7 or bringing you car to be washed at Nantahala Bank on September 22nd from 1-4; thanks go out to these businesses as well.
Upon my return I will be sharing with the community all that has been gained from this opportunity. I look forward to a great trip and a senior project that will help future generations to come through HHS.
