Hayesville's football team gets tripped up by Murphy
FRANK BRADLEY Sentinel Writer

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets walked into a hornets nest at Murphy last Friday and got stung 64 to 25.

The first quarter looked promising for the Jackets when Hayesville picked up the first touchdown of the game on a Brett Moody one-yard run to jump ahead 6 to 0.

Less than a minute later, the aggressive Bulldogs struck back with a 61 yard run by Ian Reese for their own touchdown and a kick, putting them ahead 7 to 6. Then as the Bulldogs got the ball back as the quarter wound down, they picked up another touchdown on a George Kerber 26- yard pass play, giving them a 14 to 6 lead over Hayesville as the quarter ended.

In the 2nd quarter, the Bulldogs got fired up as though they were being smoked out of their nest or doghouse. Murphy's Patrick Canizio scored three TD's and Reese scored another as the Jacket defense simply couldn't stop the Bulldog romp. Still, Hayesville's offense came through with two touchdowns of their own: a pass to Robert Rogers from quarterback Jonathan Shively and a 45-yard run by Shively as the half ended.

Photos by Bob Williams Head Football Coach Neil Setzer saw his team jump to an early lead, but fall behind due to Murphy's strong running attack. He tried to keep the game from slipping away during time out in the first quarter.
In the second half, Murphy continued its onslaught, picking up three more touchdowns before the Jackets got back on the scoreboard again with a run by Tim Shaffer and an extra point kick by Sean Tant.

The Bulldogs rushed for 516 yards to the Jackets 191. Most of the Murphy rushes were for large gains. It was simply not a Jacket night for blocking and tackling.

Although pressured throughout the game by the spirited Bulldog defense, Shively managed to complete 11 out of 19 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown.

This Friday, Hayesville faces a much improved Andrews team in a home game, the last of the regular season.

"We have to focus on winning our final game," coach Neil Setzer said on Monday. "We have to put the Murphy game behind up. They played a near perfect game, and we just weren't ready for that." Setzer said the Jacket team has to be more aggressive on defense when they take on the Wildcats. "We need to play fundamental football, basic football," he said.

Several Jacket players are injured and probably won't play on Friday, but Setzer said they will be bringing up some 6 or 7 players from the JV team, which has completed its season, which should help to fillin the gaps from the Jacket injuries.

"We want to finish the season strong as we go into the playoffs," Setzer said. Game time is 7:30 p.m at Frank Long Stadium.
