FRANK BRADLEY Sentinel Writer

In an offensive show of force, the Hayesville Yellow Jackets took to the air racking up 343 yards and added 155 yards rushing to defeat the Andrews Wildcats 54 to 17 in a crowd pleasing home game on Friday.

Seven of the Jackets touchdowns came in the first half of the game as quarterback Jonathan Shively threw three touchdown passes to Tim Coker, Jordan Jones and Robert Rogers, respectively. Shively also scored on a 16

yard run in the first quarter, and threw another touchdown pass to Trevor Staton late in the 3rd quarter.

The Yellow Jacket defense also rose to the occasion after a disappointing game with Murphy last week. Bradley Nuckolls and Brett Moody led the defense with a combined 14 tackles and nine assists, while Tim Coker and Matt Beni forced and recovered two Andrews fumbles. Trevor Staton also picked off a Wildcat pass for a six yard runback.

Still, it was the Jacket passing game that unnerved the Wildcats. Shively connected for 15 out of 18 passes. Staton and Rogers each caught fivethrows for 97 and 89 yards respectively. Jordan Jones caught three of the passes, and Tim Shaffer and Staton each caught a touchdown pass.

In the kicking department, Shaun Tant booted seven of his eight attempts through the uprights. And fivenew

players from the JV team (which has

completed its season) saw some play

in this varsity game. Jonathan Garrett picked up eight yards on one rushing attempt and also was credited with a tackle. Freshmen Dakota Lyvers and Zach Stiles also got in on some tackles.

While this was the year for Cherokee, which won the conference title, Hayesville had a good regular season, ending up in a three-way tie with Murphy and Swain for second place. Both are larger 1 A schools and will play in

different bracket than the Jackets in the state playoffs which commence this Friday.

Hayesville will take on East Wilkes in a home game at the Frank Long Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m.

Coach Neil Setzer said the focus is on winning this game. "We're not thinking ahead," he said. "We're taking nothing for granted. It is important that we win this game."

Photos by Bob Williams Friday night was Senior Night, with special recognition being paid to HHS seniors. The senior members of the football team were all delegated captains for the game. Here, the seniors take the field before the toss.
Still, Setzer calls this an exciting time. The Jackets have finished strong with the win over Andrews and are relatively healthy. While Tino Scolaro, Chad Woody and Austin Shively are nursing injuries, it is possible that one or more of them will see some play in Friday's game. Senior wide-receiver Josh Holloway, who also has been injured, is not expected to see anymore play action.

Setzer said that East Wilkes has

number of "speedy kids" and that there is a lot of things they can do offensively. "They are hard to defend against because they mix up their offense a lot," he said. Setzer said that East Wilkes has an aggressive defense. That they blitz a lot, and that the Jacket offensive linemen will have to be on their toes because they can expect up to 6, 7 or even 8 men rushing the Jacket backfield."They loop their linebacker which makes it difficultto defend against," he said. "We're going to have to work hard to protect our quarterback, work hard on the offensive line to pick up the blocks," he said.

East Wilkes has a topnotch lineman in Logan Pruett, a 6'1", 215 senior. Two other strong players on the team are running backs Aaron Burgett and Nathan Bryan, according to Setzer.

This is a must win for the Jackets to stay in the playoffs. They will be facing a tough opponent, but have the home field advantage, and hopefully a lot of fans cheering the team on. So far the weather has been great for football, and although it is likely to turn a little colder, it just makes this team's bid for a run through the playoff bracket all the more challenging. So come on out. It is sure to be an exciting game.
