Mountain community chorus

Christmas is coming and the Mountain Community Chorus is working hard on the music for the 2007 Christmas concerts, to be held in the the First United Methodist Church in Hayesville, NC, on Friday, December 7 at 8pm and Sunday, December 9, at 3pm. When Bill Fox, the music director, handed out the music for the exciting Magnificat by Mark Hayes and played a recording of it 10 week ago, many of us wondered if we could possibly sin it with all the changes in mood, tempo and key. Now, under Bill Fox's tutelage, we not only can sing it, but we can sing it well. What a thrill to sing such great music. It will WOW the audience.

Another great piece performed is the Christmas Oratorio by Saint-Saens accompanied by piano, organ, two violins, two violas, a cello and a double bass. Two of the violinists rehearsed with the chorus recently. Vern Richardson, first violin, has performed with the chorus several times. He also records the concerts, which is greatly appreciated by the chorus.

Originally from Indiana, he earned 3 music degrees before going to Atlanta where he performed with the Atlanta Symphony. Later he was pilot with the Strategic Air Command. His violin was his companion on his flights so he could always practice when he wasn't flying. One of his students, Judi Rothkopf, will play second violin with the chorus. She moved to Hayesville from Atlanta in 2001 and began studying the violin just 4 years ago after playing acoustic guitars for 35 years. She really enjoys her new instrument and has played musicals at Young Harris College and for oratorios at local churches. Both violinists play in an esemble for bowed string instruments called "Ageless Strings", which meets Thursday evenings at Young Harris College. For more info about the group contact Vern Richardson at 706-379-2711.

As always, bill fox has chosen a great variety of music for the program. There are several lesser known Christmas Carols, contemporary and classical. Mark your calendars so you don't miss this wonderful musical treat. Dates again: Friday, Dec. 7, at 8pm and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3pm at the Hayesville First United Methodist Church, just off the square.
