Where's the fire tax money going? Members of the county volunteer fire department are calling for an audit of the fire tax monies that go to the department saying there is no accountability for how the monies are being spent. Dan Hollifield, one of the volunteers, who is himself a retired fire fighter from Hall, County Georgia, that he has asked in writing to see the records, including the last audit, but that his request has gone ignored. Hollifield, who has been a volunteer firefighter in Clay County since the 1970's said there needs to be a complete and thorough audit to determine what equipment is being purchased, why it is not being bought by competitive bid, when and where it is being received and where the assets are now. Hollifield said he made a written request to the fire chief and the board of directors for this information three months ago, but his request has been ignored. "They are using thousands of taxpayer funds," he said. "They are required by law to have the records open to the public." Hollifield is bringing his request to the county commissioners at their monthly meeting to be held in the new courthouse this Thursday, December 6 at 6 p.m. The VFD issue is one of more than 20 items listed on the agenda for the meeting. Others include a proposed Solid Waste Management Ordinance, which is expected to be passed. The ordinance sets out the provisions for the collection, transportation, use and disposal of solid wastes within the county.
In the Thursday meeting, the commissioners will elect or re-elect their chairman for next year; they will listen to a presentation on the Mountain Landscape Initiative, consider a draft county parks ordinance and handle several other matters before holding a public comments session.
