School track to be named for Buck Carney

Calling Buck Carney a remarkable individual, school superintendent Scott Penland announced the decision made by the school board to name the high school track, the Buck Carney Track.

"He (Carney) has the uncanny ability to get the very best out of his students and give them the encouragement to reach goals they never thought they could reach," Penland said. "I've watched him for many years as he tailored his coaching to fit the 'Individual.' He does not use the 'one size fits all' approach, and he has been quite successful with it," Penland said.

"I am very pleased to be able to name the track after Mr. Carney," Penland continued. "It was his tenacity and drive that got the track built. And it is a first class facility used not only by students but by the commuity as well," Penland said.

Carney has been a teacher at Hayesville High School for more than 18 years. During that time, he has not only been a classroom teacher, but a successful coach as well. He has been an inspiration to many who either had him in the clasroom or ran Cross Cournty/ Track for him.

A resolution to be passed by the board states: Whereas, Buck Carney was the guiding force in developing an outstanding Track and Cross Countyr program at Hayesville High School, and whereas, he has coached the Hayesville High Cross Country teams to 15 Smoky Mountain Conference championships, 7 Westeern Region Championships, 6 State Championships, and whereas, he coached the Hayesville High School Ttrack teams to 5 Smoky Mountain Conference Championships, 3 Western Region Championships, 2 State Championships, and whereas, the Hayesville High School Track and Cross Country teams have always represented Hayesville High School with dignity, integrity and class, therefore be it resolved, that the Clay County Board Education hereby recognizes Mr. Buck Carney for his extraordinary accomplishment and extreme effort and dedication to the sports of Cross Country and Track by officially naming the Hayesville High School Track, the Buck Carney Track.

Carney to be recognized Thursday, December 20th at Hayesville high school gym following the womens basketball varsity games.
