Spokesman for Recycling
Hayesville High School Senior Alex Walters came before the Clay County Board of Commissioners Thursday evening to ask for their assistance with a recycling project he has undertaken at the local school.
Walters explained to Commissioners that as part of his senior exit project he would like to make sure that students for years to come have the opportunity to make a difference in their environment by recycling. Walters shared with commissioners that while 75% of common household waste can be recycled, only 25% is recycled. Walters asked himself how he could help Clay County Schools do a better job of recycling its waste. Currently, a student led recycling effort at Hayesville High consists of simple unmarked cardboard boxes in most classrooms to collect paper. Walters said he believes that recycling would increase tremendously if uniform recycling bins were placed in each classroom, clearly marked as a recycling container. As part of his senior project, Walters told Commissioners that he visited Macon County Schools where they have uniform bins in each room and the school actually receives revenue from the recyclable products they collect. Walters explained to the Commission that his purpose in coming before them was to ask for their support and for a financial contribution to help purchase the bins. The approximate cost would be $500. Walters also asked if the county could help with providing a dumpster for the recyclables and transportation to the transfer station.
