Bob Lawson Named Stecoah Artisan of the Month
Stecoah Valley Artisans Gallery proudly announces Bob Lawson as Artisan of the Month for October 2007. A retired systems analyst from California, Bob makes drums and teaches drum making to others. He first became interested in making drums while taking a class on Native American studies. The class instructor brought in an octagonal hand drum to use while teaching songs and Bob became interested in drum making.
Bob makes his drums from poplar, pine, oak and maple. The drums are covered with different animal hides including calf, goat, buffalo and elk. Bob also uses natural dyes for some of his drum hides. The natural dye ingredients are often collected on his land here in Graham County.
Bob's works include hand drums from 8 to 28 inches in diameter, Pow Wow drums up to 60 inches and large portable table drums up to 48 inches in diameter. To see some of Bob's drums, visit the Stecoah Artisans Gallery at Stecoah Valley Center, 121 Schoolhouse Road in the Stecoah Community.
