NCDOT ANNOUNCES 2007 WILDFLOWER AWARD WINNERS

Highway Division 14 Wins Best Overall Program

RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation announced the winners of the 18th Annual Wildflower Awards at a breakfast held Dec. 5 in downtown Raleigh. The awards recognized the efforts of NCDOT staff to carry out North Carolina's wildflower program and enhance the overall appearance and environmental quality of the state's highways.

The awards were presented by N.C. Board of Transportation Chairman J. Douglas Galyon and Transportation Secretary Lyndo Tippett. This event is sponsored by the Garden Club of North Carolina Inc.

The 2007 award winners are:

• Best Overall Division Wildflower Program: First Place - Division 14, which includes Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Polk, Swain and Transylvania counties; Second Place - Division 1, which includes Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington counties; and Honorable Mention - Division 12, which includes Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell and Lincoln counties;

• William D. Johnson Daylily Award: First Place - Division 4 - U.S. 264 Bypass at Downing Street in Wilson County; Second Place - Division 1 - N.C. 168 at Courthouse Road (State Road 1242) in Currituck County; and Honorable Mention - Division 7 - Interstate 40 at N.C. 62 in Alamance County;

• Best Regional Wildflower Planting, Eastern Region: First Place - Division 4 - U.S. 264 Bypass at Downing Street in Wilson County; Second Place - Division 1 - N.C. 11 at N.C. 561 in Hertford County and Honorable Mention - Division 2 - U.S. 264 at Mozingo Road in Pitt County;

• Best Regional Wildflower Planting, Central Region: First Place - Division 5 - I-40 East at intersection of I-440 in Wake County; Second Place - Division 9 - I-40 at U.S. 64 in Davie County; and Honorable Mention - Division 7 - N.C. 68 at Bryan Boulevard in Guilford County; and

• Best Regional Wildflower Planting, Western Region: First Place - Division 12 - I-40 west of Oxford Road at mile marker 136 in Catawba County; Second Place - Division 11 - U.S. 421 at Dennyville Road in Wilkes County; and Honorable Mention - Division 14 - I-40 at mile marker 34 in Haywood County.

The NCDOT Wildflower Program began in 1985 and is coordinated by the department's Roadside Environmental Unit, which installs and maintains more than 2,000 acres of wildflowers along North Carolina's highways.
