New Show Explores Red Planet at Rollins Planetarium

The new Friday night public show at the Rollins Planetarium is Mars Update. From

H.G. Wells and the possibility of Martian life to the recent adventures of the Spirit and Opportunity rovers on the planet's surface, people have long been fascinated by the Red Planet. The show provides a brief historical overview of Mars, and brings audiences up to date with the latest news and status of missions to explore the planet. Mars Update will be presented on the following Friday evenings: January 11th, 18th & 25th, and February 15th, 22nd & 29th.

Planetarium programs start promptly at 8:00 p.m. Seating begins about 15 minutes before showtime. The planetarium is located in the Maxwell Center building on the campus of Young Harris College. There is no admission charge.

If skies are clear, the Young Harris College Observatory is open immediately after the planetarium show ends, which should be about 8:45. The observatory features a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, and is located about a mile-and-a-half from campus on the grounds of the Brasstown Valley Resort. Maps are available in the planetarium lobby if needed. The planet Mars is well-placed for viewing in our evening skies in early 2008, and will be joined by Saturn in the coming weeks. The observing session will also include a guided tour of the constellations. The session will end between 9:30 and 9:45 PM. The observatory is open on the same dates the planetarium is open.
