Stecoah Artisan of the Month

Stecoah Valley Artisans Gallery proudly announces Peggy Duncan as Artisan of the Month for January 2008. Peggy was born and raised in the sprawling countryside surrounding Tampa, Florida. Exploring her grandparents' orange grove and nursery gave her an early affinity for nature and its flora. Summers spent in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her maternal grandmother deepened her love of gardening and the beauty of the world around her. In 1979, she left the rolling scenery of North Carolina for the flat vistas and lush, incorrigible gardens of the South Carolina lowcountry.

While her work is representational, Peggy is not concerned with pure realism. There is an animated quality to her depiction of trees and flowers. "I communicate my own response to the subject through interpretation of color and light."

Pastel is Peggy's medium of choice, allowing her to achieve the feeling of immediacy and freshness that she seeks in her work. At the same time, her acrylic and oils are vibrant, with a spontaneous, intuitive quality. Peggy is a member of Excellence in the Southeastern Pastel Society and a member of the Degas Pastel Society. Her work has been accepted in over forty regional and national shows and hangs in private collections

across the country and overseas.

Peggy returned to North Carolina in 2006 and opened a new gallery on the main floor of her 1910 stone house. The Artists House Gallery is where you mat find her these days, painting out on the front porch.

To see some of Peggy's artwork, visit the Stecoah Artisans Gallery at Stecoah Valley Center, 121 Schoolhouse Road in the Stecoah Community or visit Peggy's studio at The Artists House Gallery, 40 Victorian Drive in Bryson City.
