North GA. SPCA GETS GRANT

The North Georgia SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has obtained a grant from the DJ&T Foundation for fiscal 2008. The grant is limited to assisting in the cost of spay/ neuter of owned dogs.

Since the organizations beginning in the fall of 2004, the N. GA. SPCA has assisted in spaying or neutering nearly 900 dogs and cats the majority of which were in Towns and Union Counties. Assistance was also given on an "as need basis" to residence of Fannin and Clay Counties.

The organization, working in conjunction with PetsMart and most recently with PetCo in the Marietta-Woodstock area, has also found homes for an additional 275 dogs and cats over the same period, during their monthly adoption day outings.

The North Georgia SPCA's goal is to reduce the population of strays and unwanted pets by assisting residents in getting pets spayed/neutered before they come into heat.

The grant is a god-send, said Kathy McIntyre. Recent fund raising has not kept up with the demand. Last year alone we assisted in 507 cases before running short of funds in November. The grant, while specifically geared to dogs, will allow us to direct more local funds to cats.

Assisting Kathy on the Board of Directors is: Allan Jones, VP; Linda Soncrant, Secretary; Deb Goode, Treasurer; Board Members, Eulalie Jones, Michelle Fusco and volunteer Dianne Kwiatkowski.

This small energetic group is looking for a few animal lovers to assist in carrying out their mission. If you'd like to help "save a pet", give us a call! You can reach the local chapter at 706-745-SPCA (7722), leave a message and someone will get back to you.
