Elementary school running smoothly
It is a position he will hold until the end of the school year, allowing Superintendent Penland and the school board ample opportunity to go through a rigorous search in selecting a long-term replacement. Although Arnold is new to Hayesville Elementary, he is well acquainted with the operations of public schools, especially elementary ones, having spent 33 years in education with about a third of that time in administration. Most of Arnold's experience was in Macon County. Arnold is a graduate of Franklin High School and Western Carolina University, where he holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He was principal of Cartoogechaye Elementary for 10 years both in the older school and the much larger more recent one. Arnold retired from the school system 18 months ago and had been busy enjoying the fruits of that retirement engaging in outdoor recreational activities until his recent return to the school house. "I want to thank Mr. Penland and the school board for giving me the opportunity to work again in the school environment," he told me. "I'm having such a good time, doing things I enjoy the most. I truly appreciate this and all everybody has done to make me feel welcome here." Arnold said he pleased with the school's teachers. "They have the students very much in mind," he said. "They are interested in getting the best out of their students." Arnold said he doesn't foresee making any big changes while at Hayesville Elementary. "That's because things are running so smoothly," he said.
Jerry Arnold is the husband of Carol Arnold, Associate Superintendent of Clay County Schools. The couple have one son, Jason, who is an Assistant District Attorney in Macon County.
