Cooking with Barbara
By Barbara Walker-Huff

When I moved to Hayesville eighteen years ago, my good friends Gladys Patton brought me a recipe book. " Cooking in Clay County". She was a wonderful neighbor over the years and would never let you leave herhouse without something from her pantry or freezer. She was a grand cook and gardner. She now lives in Hiawassee in an Assisted Living facility, and is sorely missed her in the old neighborhood.

One of her specialties was Molasses Sugar Cookies.

Molasses Sugar Cookies

Melt 1 1/2 sticks of margarine and cool. Add: 1 cup sugar and 1/4 cup molasses Beat in 1 egg Sift together. 2 Tsp. soda and 1/2 Tsp. Cloves, 1 Tsp. cinnamon 2 1/2 Cups sifted flour, 1/2 Tsp. Ginger and 1/2 Tsp. salt

Add dry ingredients to egg mixture and mix well. Chill. Roll in 1-inch balls and roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on a greased or sprayed cookie sheet.

Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes, no longer!
