Senator John Snow to Seek Re-Election
Snow, a Murphy Democrat, is now serving his second Senate term representing District 50, which includes the counties of Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson Macon, Swain and Transylvania. "Serving our District in the Senate is a tremendous honor and a humbling experience," said Snow, a retired district court judge with more than 30 years experience on the bench. "I have worked hard to make sure that western North Carolina gets its fair share, and that we make the right investments in education, jobs and health care so that working families can have good opportunities for success." Snow's work in the Senate has resulted in improvements in education, tax cuts, and initiatives to spur economic development. Snow has worked to bring new industry and investment to the district while not forgetting its current industrial base, and he supported removing counties' Medicaid costs to help free up money for school construction and rebuild local water and sewer infrastructure. Snow also has pushed to improve access to health care - coverage for uninsured children, making it easier for senior citizens to get access to affordable medicine, and helping create a tax credit to help small businesses provide health care for their employees. Last year Snow received the William M. Martin Senate Award from the Covenant with North Carolina's Children, which recognizes outstanding dedication and achievement on behalf of the children and youth of North Carolina. In the Senate, Snow serves on several important committees: Education/Public Instruction, Agriculture/ Environment/Natural Resources, Appropriations/Base Budget, Joint Select Committee on Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Management Recovery, Judiciary II (Criminal), Mental Health/Youth Services, Transportation and is Cochairman of Appropriations on Justice and Public Safety. A western North Carolina native, Snow and his wife Sheila are the proud parents of four adult children, and have four grandchildren. "Over the last two terms I have worked hard to put Western North Carolina back on the map,"
Snow said, "I am grateful for the support of the votes of our District, and I hope I can count on their support in this election so I can continue to work hard for them in Raleigh."
