Rep. Shuler Announces Funding to Renovate Asheville VA Hospital
Patient Ward to See Improvements Due to Budget Increases

Washington, D.C. - Representative Heath Shuler announced this afternoon that the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville is slated to receive $3.4 million to renovate a patient ward.

The ward renovation will be possible due to VA budget increases championed by Representative Shuler and passed by the Democratic Congress. The funding levels for the VA in the Fiscal Year 2008 budget for veterans' health care and benefits were increased $6.6 billion above the 2007 level, the largest single increase in the 77-year history of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The renovation of the 4W patient ward was requested as a minor construction project. Projects costing under $10 million receive the designation

of minor construction projects. The budget for minor construction projects was increased $397 million over the President's request. It is likely that these projects would not have received funding without the increased resources from the Democratic Congress.

"Too often when we talk about the federal budget we only hear the numbers and dollars, not the people that those dollars truly affect. With the renovation of the patient ward at the Charles George VA Medical Center our veterans will experience the difference. I am committed to ensuring that the brave men and women who served our Nation in uniform have the highest quality care available to them," Rep. Shuler said.
