Crime Stoppers: Sheriff Joe Shook
We were taught not to talk to strangers but have you ever thought about what strangers are online? There are people in this world that prey on unsuspecting computer users. These people can take advantage of you in many ways. Social networking (My Space and Facebook), cyber bullying (harassing someone using a computer) and online fraud are just a few examples. Over the next few weeks I would like to inform you of the dangers and help you not to become a victim.
The best way not to become a victim is educate yourself in computer use and lingo. Be conscious of what online sites you visit and what information you provide. Never give out personal information in e-mails or chat room sites. If you make online purchases, only use trusted retail sites and look for signs of security. Paying attention to little details while visiting websites can and will help you to stay safe.
There are a lot of resources available online and in print. Here are a few examples: • www.internetsafe.org • www.wiredsafety.org • www.google.com-(Search Engine) • www.enough.org • www.protectkids.com
