School budget & calendar
By Frank Bradley Staff writer

The school board OK'd a million dollar plus operating budget it is recommending to the county commissioners in its regular meeting on Monday. The proposed budget is a $91,000 or 9.6 percent increase over last year's budget. Most of the increase is a result of the projected increase cost of fuel with a fewer smaller increases in line items of contract technical services and repairs and general maintenance.

On the revenue side, the board proposal shows a jump of $77,000 from county appropriations and an expected increase in revenues from Fines & Forfeitures of $15,000. It looks like the highway patrolmen and deputies will be a little busier next year or the fines of violators will be increased.

The board proposed a capital budget for 2008-2009 of $1.04 million including $300,000 for planning of a new Primary School, $150,00 to repair the Middle School roof, $250,000 for new football bleachers and 65,000 for new mobile units to be used as temporary classrooms.

Regarding its calendar, the board revised this year's dates to show the last day of school for students to be June 10.

Spring break is set for April 14 through 18; however that is tentative depending upon the weather. There is also the possibility of Saturdays used to make up days because of inclement weather.

The calendar for next school year begins on August 18 with teachers work day. First day for students is August 25. Christmas vacation runs from December 22 until January 2. And next years Spring vacation is scheduled for April 13 through 17. The school year is set to end for students on June 5, 2009, with the last teacher's work day on June 11.
