Romantic Comedy Opens
Its first production, Romantic Comedy, as its name suggests, is a delightful threeact romance with all the banter and twists of the genre, and opens at the Peacock Playhouse on March 28. Directed by Laurel Adams and co-produced by Edie Kleinpeter and Diana Smith, the amusing tale was well chosen for the season opener. "A darling of a play... zesty entertainment of cool wit and warm sentiment," wrote a critic for the New York Post when it opened on Broadway almost thirty years ago. "An utterly disarming, lighthearted confection about love, friendship and theatrical trauma," was how an article in a woman's magazine described it. "I loved the story," said director Adams, "I was attracted to it in Los Angeles many years ago, and when the Licklog Players needed a romantic comedy, I immediately chose Romantic Comedy. "It has a superb cast," she opined, "and, like Barefoot in the Park, it came together very fast. We were a week late getting started, but everyone worked well together and we caught up quickly." Adams, whose own theatrical background includes a successful 26-year career as a Hollywood actress before retiring to head the Performing Arts Department at Murphy High School, has a keen eye for talent- and it shows. Tom DeBell and Chelsea Smith bring strength, believability and humor to their characters- he as the egotistical, sharp-tongued playwright, Jason Carmichael, and she as his mousy young colleague, Phoebe Chaddock: at first, that is. This is DeBell's first appearance on the Licklog stage. He brings with him a BA degree in Theatre which led to extensive acting experience in community theatre in Florida and Georgia. Last summer Smith, having completed a rigorous application and audition process, enrolled in the elite Governor's School for six weeks of intensive training the art of dancing. This program, sponsored by the Governor of North Carolina, has been in existence for fortyfour year, sending forth dancers whose specialized training frequently leads to successful dancing careers. Smith presently teaches ballet and pointe classes at Janice Owl's Murphy Those in the meaty School of Dance. supporting roles include Susan Wyman as Allison, Jason's socialite bride; Pat Werdin as Blanche, a literary agent; Dennis Muron as Leo, a journalist; and Michelle Honaker as Kate, Jason's illicit love interest- all of whom have strong theatrical backgrounds. Wyman is a popular Licklog Player whose last role Comedy was Romaine in Witness for the Prosecution. This will be Werdin's twenty-first show with the Licklog Players. Many will remember some of her favorite roles: Miss Lynch in Grease, Miss Hannigan in Annie, Mrs. Paroo in Music Man, Rosie in Opal is a Diamond and Sister Hubert in Nunsense. She also served on the Board of Directors twice and is very proud to have brought Laurel Adams from Los Angeles to the Playhouse as director of The King and I ten years ago. Muron also is multi-talented. He has acted, directed, written plays and appeared as an extra in movies on location in Chicago and Miami. Honaker is another newcomer to the Licklog stage. A freshman at Young Harris College majoring in Musical Theatre, she recently appeared in Thoroughly Modern Millie at YHC and also appeared in Pirates of Penzance in high school. Audiences will agree with Adams that this, indeed, is a superb cast. Plan to see this "darling of a play" during its run at the Peacock Theatre in Hayesville.
