Old Jail Museum Featured in April issue of National Geographic traveler magazine

Gov. Mike Easley has announced that Western North Carolina is featured in four scenic drives as part of a major tourism map produced collaboratively by the National Geographic Society, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the N.C. Commerce Department's Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development.

"This tourism map, called "Driving Tours: Appalacachia", will be included in the April issue of the magazine and will reach more than 865,000 subscribers nationwide,." said Easley. It will be bound as a "pull out" section within each issue. Our CCHAS Old Jail Museum is featured as a site along the Waterfall Byway/ Whitewater Way Drive. We expect that an influx of new visitors to Hayesville over the coming summer season because of our selection for this honor.

The Old Jail will open for tours beginning on Memorial Weekend, and continue through the fall. Anyone interested in working on our Museum Committee should contact Barbara Boussolari at 389-4168.

We will also be featured on the travel oriented website www.visitappalachia.com which was recently launched by the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Other sites include Toxaway Falls, Cullasaja Falls, John C. Campbell Folk School, Ft. Hembree Wayside, Scottish Tartans Museum & Heritage Center, Nikwasi Mound, Franklin Gem & Mineral Museum, Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls, Whiteside Mountain, Silver Run Falls, High, Hampton Inn, and Georges State Park.
