Murphy Medical Center Honors Physicians on Doctors' Day
Doctors' Day is celebrated nationwide every March 30 to allow hospitals and communities to publicly show appreciation for the vital role that doctors play in caring for the sick, advancing medical knowledge, and promoting good health. Mike Stevenson, Murphy Medical Center's administrator, wrote a letter of appreciation to each physician on staff. "Not only are our physicians dedicated professionals in the healthcare field, but they are actively involved in and committed to the communities they serve. We are grateful for their outstanding support and service," Stevenson said. One of the strongest relationships in health care is the doctor-patient relationship. Recognition of this fact has been acknowledged since March 30, 1933 - the date of the very first Doctors' Day observance by the Barrow County Auxiliary in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond - wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond - first thought of the idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians. It occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, in 1842.
On March 30, 1958, a resolution Commemorating Doctors' Day was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in both the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors' Day.
