North Carolina Writer's Meet at Phillips & Lloyds Book Shop

Brenda Kay Ledford tells a funny story in between reading her poems
In March of 2007, the leadership of the North Carolina Writers' Network West better known as Netwest, began a monthly poetry reading at Phillips and Lloyd Book Shop on the square in Hayesville, NC. Coffee with the Poets begins at 10:30 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Crumpets Dessertery, inside the book store, sets up a delectable array of snacks along with plenty of coffee and various teas for the writers and their guests to enjoy at a minimum charge.

"The first time I walked into Coffee with the Poets, I had the most comfortable feeling. I'm not sure if it is how Glenda Beall sets the tone by conducting

it in a way that lets everyone participate by reading their poetry or it is the quality of the readings each time. I always relax with a cup of coffee and sweet roll from the Bookstore, and each time I leave I still feel that comfortable feeling again, kind of like dining with your best friend, but I always have a new desire to write one more poem," says Glenda Barrett, poet, whose chapbook, When the Sap Rises, is forthcoming from Finishing Line Press.

For more than a year accomplished as well as first time poetry readers have come and shared their work. It is a comfortable and cozy place to try your words and verses on others. The youngest poet was a sixth grade student and the oldest is in her eighties, but everyone who comes to read or just to listen and socialize with others who love the written word, walks out with a smile on his face and a warm feeling inside.

For the months of June, July and August, Coffee with the Poets invites all students of all ages to come and share their writing. We want our summer months to be a time to spotlight our young writers in Clay, Cherokee, Towns, Union and other mountain counties.

Students are asked to bring a couple of poems or a short prose piece that can be read in five minutes. This event is open to the public, and we welcome everyone to visit with us. Our next Coffee with the Poets will be Wednesday April 23. Come and join us.
