Mountain Community Chorus Presents concert at Murphy United Methodist Church

Jesse & Elizabeth Somervell, Cy & Malinda Gray, Norm & Carole Thompson, John & Jo Carolyn Beebe, Dan & Carol Simpson, Laura & Roger Hove, Bill & Mary Ann Fox
The 2008 spring concerts will be presented at the First United Methodist Church in Murphy on Friday, May 2nd at 8 P.M., and again on Sunday, May 4th at 3 P.M. This will be the second time in recent years that the Mountain Community Chorus will have performed in this wonderful old church with its gracious hosts and amiable acoustics. The organist/music director at this church, Suzanne Major, has helped in planning for these presentations in the Murphy venue, and we are The concert program has a rather non-specific central theme this time, but the program begins with part of the creation story as told in the music of Franz Joseph Hayden. This is to help us be aware of the Great Creator's gifts to us in the Earth's abundance, and to remind us of our responsibility to preserve and nurture these gifts. Also the program will include some pieces that are familiar to many but in perhaps different settings, such as the prayer of St. Francis, a Latin prayer from the film about King Henry V and the battle of Agincourt. Another favorite is the "Cantique" by Gabriel Faure. Then a new setting by Mark Hayes of three spirituals called "Spirit Suite" will feature three outstanding soloists with the chorus.

Another featured topic will be the inclusion of several settings of alleluia and hallelujah, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Randall Thompson, and Jean Berger. These, among other titles, will be presented by the women's choir, men's choir, and chamber choir, as well as the main chorus. Throughout the program the allimportant instrumental accompaniments (organ and piano) will be supplied by Suzanne Major and Mary Ann Fox, and some very fine solo sections will feature equally fine soloists: Paul Arnold, John Beebe, Missie Kirkland, Hope Horkavy, Laura Stooksbury, David Baker, and Wayne Hundley. The chorus is under the direction of William Fox, assisted by Laura Stooksbury.

These concerts are lovingly presented free of charge by the Mountain Community Chorus for the blessings, enlightenment, and enjoyment of our audiences, and to the glory of our Great Creator (Soi Deo Gloria).
