Stephen Sebert portrays Pioneer life
By Brenda Kay Ledford

Right: Stephen Peter Sebert as he personifies Jacob Brown.
Turn a page of history. Stroll through the 1800's with Stephen Peter Sebert as he personifies Jacob Brown.

Dressed as a pioneer, Brown ambled down the streets of Hayesville with his sassafras walking stick. He stroked his graying beard and pondered the modern conveniences as he visited stores and tried to communicate with folks from another century.

It was cultural shock, but a good lesson on pioneer life in America. That was the purpose of Stephen Peter Sebert visiting our town.

"I serve as an ambassador of another time," said Sebert at the annual Clay County Historical and Arts Council meeting on Thursday, April 17th at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. About 60 people attended the covered-dish dinner and presentation.

Sebert is vice president of the Brown County Historical Society in Nashville, Indiana. He gave a power point presentation on the pioneer village in his town. It is similar to the proposed Nelson Heritage Park in Hayesville.

Besides presenting the slide show, Sebert told stories from the view point of Jacob Brown. He was a character born in the 1800's and shared pioneer life with the Clay County Historical and Arts Council.

Sebert was very impressed with Clay County and wrote the following poem while visiting our area:

CLAY COUNTY Blue, Red & White Is Clay--------County,

America to its core.

Any fool can see a mountain is grandeur

But it's in our wrinkles, gaps and creeks

In our jails, junk and grandma's collections

The artist paints a masterpiece The poet hears a song The weaver sees a pattern

The teller a wise tale.

Additionally, reports were given during the Arts Council meeting on the Nelson Heritage Park, membership contest for the council, and plans to expand the Peacock Playhouse.

The following board members were elected to the Clay County Historical and Arts Council: Reba Beck, Steve Zimmerman, Janice Padgett, Wanda Jones, Hal Ferrin, Louise Lorentzen, Sandy Zimmerman, Bill Clements, and Kim Joris.

Finally, Reba Beck announced "Evening with the Arts" will be held on May 15th at the Hayesville High School Lecture Hall. Students and adults who won the poetry contest will read their work and students will display their artwork. The Clay County Historical and Arts Council will sponsor the celebration.
