Crime Stoppers with Sheriff Joe Shook

As we enter into the second week of 2008 Spring "Litter Sweep" I thought I would give you a few tips for a successful litter pick up. Whether you are cleaning up a high traffic area or the back roads in your neighborhood make sure to dress appropriately. Your clothing needs to be bright enough to be seen by drivers. Use gloves to pick up trash just in case you come in contact with broken material that could harm you. Also be mindful of poisonous plants, insects or snakes. Watch for unknown or unlabeled substances. Methamphetamine drug lab waste can be found in many shapes or forms. There are many chemicals used in the production of the drug and the waste can be discarded on the side of the road.

Meth lab waste could be medicine boxes, pill residue (putty looking substance pink to red in color), respirator masks, rubber gloves, rubber hosing and clamps, pyrex glass, corning containers and other containers with rubber hoses attached.

Others items to watch for are propane tanks (gas grill size), antifreeze, abandoned barrels, broken automotive batteries, chemical containers, hypodermic needles, paint cans, used oil or weapons. If you come across any of these items, note the location and notify either the Sheriff's Office or the local NCDOT.

Remember to put your safety and the safety of others FIRST AND FOREMOST. I would like to thank your for interest and willingness to help keep Clay County clean.
