Family comedy next show at the Peacock Playhouse The warm and funny comedy, Over the River and through the Woods, by John DiPietro opens May 30th at the Peacock Playhouse in Hayesville. This play ran for almost two years and 800 performances in New York. Produced after DiPietro's smash hit, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, critics agreed that there was no sophomore slump for the playwright. At the heart of the play is love of family, which in this case, consists of four Italian American grandparents from Hoboken, New Jersey who dote upon their grandson, their only relative left in the area. The grandson, a marketing executive in Manhatten dutifully has dinner every Sunday with his grandparents. All is well until one Sunday when he announces that he has received a big promotion that will take him to Seattle. The four golden agers charge into action to come up with some way to keep their beloved grandson in the area. From matchmaking and other schemes to general meddling and always more food, the resourceful seniors pull out all the stops to prevent his leaving. The author says, "The biggest difference between these generations is their concept of family and home. They believed that the family was central, and work is something you just do to provide for them. For our generation, it's a lot more complicated." Happily for the Licklog Players, Vianne Payne has returned to the Peacock Playhouse to direct Over the River and through the Woods, one of her favorite plays. Regular theatergoers have come to expect a wonderful evening of theater from her productions. Last season Payne directed Harvey.
