Reece Society to Honor Poet's Memory

"Remembering Reece" is the topic of this year's program for the Byron Herbert Reece Society's fifth annual meeting. Members and friends of the Society will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the poet/novelist's death. Reece was teaching at Young Harris College, and it was there that he committed suicide in his Young Harris College dormitory room on June 3, 1958.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, May 31, in the Wilson Lecture Hall of the Goolsby Center on the Young Harris College campus. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m., and the meeting will get underway at 10:00.

A special feature of this year's meeting is a book fair representing some 20 authors who are members of the Reece Society. Books of fiction, poetry, essays, and history will be displayed, written by authors such as Bettie Sellers, Zell Miller, Terry Kay, Steven Harvey, Bob Short, Mildred Greear, and Raymond Cook. Most of the authors will be present to sign copies of books that are purchased. The four volumes of Reece's poetry and his two novels will also be on display and for sale.

After the business session of the meeting and an intermission for book browsing, a panel of four people will share some of their special recollections of Reece. This group will be moderated by Bob Short, noted for his "Reflections on Georgia Politics," a remarkable series of videoed interviews of distinguished Georgia politicians. The panelists are Raymond Cook (author of Mountain Singer: The Life and the Legacy of Byron Herbert Reece and coeditor of Faithfully Yours: The Letters of Byron Herbert Reece); Mildred Greear, who was a close friend of Reece; Dottie Coltrane, who was Reece's student at YHC; and David Hyatt, also a former student who as Zack in the historical drama "The Reach of Song," muses about his days in Reece's class. Others present at the meeting may also share some memories.

Following the meeting, a delicious buffet luncheon will be served at the Young Harris College Restaurant. Classical music, Reece's favorite, will be played during the mealtime, featuring Vern Richardson on the violin.

Members have received a special mailing about the annual meeting. Anyone is welcomed who wishes to participate. The cost of registration and the meal is $15.00 per person. The cost of registration alone is $7.00. Please contact John Kay at (706) 379-3219 or jkay@yhc.edu right away if you wish to attend.
