2008 May Master Gardener athens, Ga Tour

Clay County Master Gardeners are planning a second Bus Tour to visit two gardens May 31.

The first stop will be a guided tour of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens, The tour will last about 1 1/2 hours and will cover the Conservatory, Herb Garden, Heritage Garden, Physic Garden and the International Garden.

No Catered lunch. We will be stopping for lunch after the first Garden at the " World Famous Varsity". For those who do not wish to dine at the Varsity you may bring a lunch from home, including bottled water.

The second stop will be a visit to " Goodness Grows" the nursery that furnishes the Southeast with a number of perennials on the market today. In 1977 these two young Univ. of GA students began re-introducing so many of the wonderful old time perennials my parents raised years ago at their Nursery on Lenox Road in Atlanta. These two young men realized that the market was lacking and started their first nursery in Crawford, Ga. Seventy per cent of the plants they raised

Herbaceous Perennials, with a few selected shrubs and trees. They are responsible for introducing many new cultivars to the market such as : Lantana camara 'Miss Huff', Dianthus 'Bath's Pink',Archillea 'Oertel's Rose' ( Yarrow) and Veronica 'Goodness Grows'. This Nursery is located in Lexington, Ga, close to the University of Georgia. There will be no guided tour here. but participants may wander around through out the nursery, pick out plants and purchase as many as they desire. Bring your checkbooks if you wish to buy plants.

We suggest wearing comfortable shoes, bring a sun hat and rain wear, because this tour does not have a rain-date. We believe a little rain does not stop " die hard gardeners".

Tour Price $45 ( not including lunch) You will pay for your own at the Varsity or brown bag it. Departure time 8 a.m. from Nantahala and Citizens Banks on Highway 64 in Hayesville. Space is limited. Payment required for reservation. Make checks to: Jan Waldon

For more information call: Jan Waldon -828-389-0266 Or the Clay County Extension Office Donna or Silas 828-389-6305.
