Railroad Club will learn about county history On Thursday, May 15, the Valley River Model Railroad Club will hold it's regular monthly meeting at the L&N Depot in Downtown Murphy beginning at 6 p.m. The interested public is cordially invited to attend. This month's featured speaker is Mr. Ben Pipes, a lifelong resident of Murphy with an intense interest in Cherokee County history. Mr. Pipes will utilize his encyclopedic memory of names, dates and events as it relates to railroading in and around the Murphy area. His brother-in-law was once an engineer for the Southern Railway in Murphy, so he may tell some family secrets, too! Murphy is reputed to be the smallest community in the United States to serve as an interchange of two major rail lines - The Southern Railway and the the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. many old-time residents can recall the day when Murphy was served by eight regularly scheduled Southern trains daily - including first class passenger service. The Valley River Model Railroad Club (VRMRC) is constructing an N-scale layout depicting local area railroading inside the Southern caboose adjacent to the L&N Depot. It is expected the layout will be open for public viewing by Labor Day.
For more information about the VRMRC, please call 828-361-2210.
