TCCC board discusses working with colleges

The Tri-County Community College Board of Trustees met on Thursday, June 19 on the Main Campus.

President Dr. Donna Tipton-Rogers reported on a legislative meeting held jointly with Southwestern Community College in Sylva. Representatives from local, state, and national elected officials attended the meeting along with Scott Ralls, President of the North Carolina Community College System. The meeting was held to discuss opportunities for the colleges to work together for the advancement of western North Carolina.

She also reported that the North Carolina Board of Nursing recently visited the college as part of an overview of the Region A Nursing Consortium, of which TCCC has been a member since 1980. The board had several recommendations to improve the program and these will be implemented beginning in the fall. Currently, 69 students are in training at clinical sites throughout the region.

Dr. Steve Wood reported on the status of the reaccreditation process the college is undergoing from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The committee is working on two areas, the Compliance Certification and the Quality Enhancement Plan. The Compliance Certification consists of 74 standards and reports on 24 of them have been completed. The Quality Enhancement Plan is in the planning stages. The Board approved the creation of an Ad Hoc committee to work on the SACS reaccreditation process.

The Board renewed the contract with College Bookstores of America to run the bookstore on the Main Campus for an additional five years.

The Board also approved the facility Master Plan for the college that was developed by Clark Patterson Lee architects. The plan was developed at the request of state board of community colleges and includes projected facilities, needs for the next ten years.
