Trial starts in former deputy case
After an intense week of jury selection, a jury is seated in the Eddie Osborn, former Chief Deputy, aggravated assault case. Opening statements began on Monday. Security is tight at the courthouse, due to the highly publicized nature of the case. Metal detectors have been brought in, borrowed from Union County and Sheriff Deputies are stationed at the courtroom doors. Last week's bomb scare did not hold up the jury selection for any more than an hour before the jury pool was moved to McConnell Church to continue with selection. The incident is not thought to have had anything to do with the case. More than 200 citizens were called for jury duty before the jury was selected. On July 9, 2007, Osborn and another man allegedly shot 14 rounds at the residence of Gary Dean on Cynth Creek Road in Hiawassee. His charges include violation of oath, influencing a witness, tampering with evidence and aggravated assault. Former Sheriff Rudy Eller has already pled guilty for his part in the incident. So far, the larger media outlets from Atlanta and other areas have not been reporting on the case.
Dozens of witnesses are expected to testify for both the prosecution and defense. The trial is expected to last for up to two weeks.
