Red Cross gives blood donors a chance for relief at the pump Summer generally brings to mind backyard barbecues and family vacations, but record-high gas prices have put a damper on summer travel plans for many families. The American Red Cross hopes its summer promotion will provide three lucky blood donors a little relief at the pump. Everyone who presents to donate blood platelets between July 1 and September 30, 2008, can enter to win one of three $1,000 gas cards as part of its " Save a Life and See America" promotion. Wednesday, July 9 Hayesville Community Blood Drive at the Clay County Health Department 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Please call 612-8537 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Monday, July 14 Murphy Community Blood Drive at First United Methodist Church, 71 Valley River Avenue, Murphy, NC 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Please call 837-3889 for more information to schedule an appointment.
The American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region needs 1,600 people to donate blood and platelets each weekday to meet the needs of patients in approximately 103 hospitals throughout the region. Most people who are age 17 or older and weigh 110 pounds are eligible to give blood every 56 days. A single blood donation can help save up to three lives. Please call 1-800-GIVELIFE (448-3548) or visit www.redcrossblood. org to make an appointment to donate blood today.
