BURSTING IN AIR
Weather perfect for Freedom Celebration fireworks and fun

HARRISON KEELY/ Sentinel Photo THE WORKS: A series of fireworks are shoto off at Chatuge Dam on July 4 near the finale of the evening.

The sky was alive Friday night with an array of fireworks celebrating America's freedom at Chatuge Dam.

Local band Gnarly Fingers provided music to accompany the array of children's activities, food and drinks on sale by the Hayesville Civitan club and a patriotic segment featuring local servicemen and heroes.

Keith Nuckolls gave a speech regarding American freedom.

"I have memories of going to Fourth of July celebrations [and] how wonderful it is to be an American," he said. "I am concerned about a generation that we have today that we need to tell more and more about our heritage."

Despite the lack of a shuttle service this year, the event was well attended. T-shirts, balloons and glow toys were sold and barbecue was available as well.

Recent Hayesville High School graduate Sarah McAuliffe sang the National Anthem.

Nuckolls concluded by reminding citizens of the history of the United States.

"As proud as this nation is of its flag, it is by the grace of God that we exist," he said.
