Crime Stoppers
A good review of gun laws

The recent ruling of The United States Supreme Court affirming the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual the right to own a handgun did not change for the State of North Carolina. The ruling allowed some restrictions on that right. The restrictions include certain persons to be prohibited from owning a handgun because of mental health or criminal records. A unit of local government may adopt an ordinance to permit the posting of a prohibition against carrying a concealed handgun on government buildings, their appurtenant premises, and parks. The State of North Carolina had already set forth these directives.

If you are interested in purchasing a handgun, you will need to come into the Sheriff's Office to fill out an application. The process does require an in depth background check through the FBI database. Once the background check in completed by the regulations of the State of North Carolina and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) a permit will be issued. The state requires the Sheriff's Office to charge a fee of $5.00 for each permit, which is valid for one purchase only.

To obtain a concealed carry permit (CCP) you must attend an approved firearms safety course. Once you pass the approved class you will need to come into the Sheriff's Office to begin the application process. This process includes an application, a criminal history background check, a mental health background check, fingerprinting and processing fee of $90.00.

If you have any questions you may either contact the Sheriff's Office or the NC Department of Justice website: www.ncdoj.com/law_enforcement/ cle_handguns.jsp
