Rescued dog learning to detect drugs

Contributed photo DOG DELIGHT: Valley River Humane Society kennel manager Angela Coleman with Tempest, a rescued Dutch Shepherd now training to do drug detection for the Unadilla Police Department.
Angela Coleman, kennel manager for the Valley River Humane Society, shows German Shepherds. Her first day on the job, she recognized Tempest, a stray puppy, as a Dutch Shepherd and took him home as a foster puppy.

Someone from the Unadilla Police Department had contacted a German Shepherd breeder to find a young dog to train, the breeder called Coleman, and now Tempest has a new home and a career. The young dog will be training for six to nine months.

The Dog Breed Information Center describes Dutch Shepherds as "among the most competent of all shepherd dogs" at guard work. Drug detecting dogs can be seen in international ports and airports.

This month's success story of Tempest is one of the happy endings at Valley River Humane Society. Their website, /www.valleyriverhumanesociety. org, has more information and the newsletters.
