Download, upload, edit and organize photos for free

As part of the "Software Solutions for People on a Budget" series, One Dozen Who Care's Small Business Center in Andrews, NC is hosting Picasa2: One Stop Solution for Digital Photographers who Haven't Mastered or Can't Afford Photoshop seminar.

The Picasa2: One Stop Solution for Digital Photographers who Haven't Mastered Photoshop is a 2-day seminar that will be held Mondays August 11 and 18 from 1pm to 4pm. Registration is required as seating is limited.

There is a $45 registration fee for this seminar. Participants should bring their cameras, with USB cables, and have 20 digital photos ready for downloading.

It is important to note that Picasa2 is not a replacement for Photoshop, nor should it be considered, by any gymnastic stretch of the imagination, as a product competing with Photoshop.

Picasa2, however, is a highly efficient, workflow-oriented program with competent tools for editing images.

Ronda Birtha, the Director of the Small Business Center at One Dozen Who Care, Inc., and photography instructor at the Community Folklife Documentation Institute will be conducting the seminar. See a sampling of Ms. Birtha's work at www.rondabirtha. com

Dual exibit at Art Friday to feature crochet work

One Dozen Who Care, Inc. (ODWC), a Community Development Corporation, is proud to announce that the July Art Friday is a dual exhibit, featuring the crochet art work of Karen Roberts and pottery by Malti Turnbull. Art Friday is from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, July 25 at the ODWC office located at 65 Wilson Street, Andrews Towne Center. The ODWC office is between the Dollar General Store and PJ's Pizza.

The mission of ODWC is to strengthen leadership among local women and youth and to create strong community bonds through common cultural interactions in far western North Carolina. Art Fridays began in May 2006 and have proved to be an important avenue for carrying out the mission of ODWC.

Western North Carolina seems to house as many artists as it has trees. Among them is Karen Rogers Roberts, who grew up in a small, closeknit community in Graham County.

The third of three children and only girl, she's certainly not the black sheep of the bunch. Her father and two older brothers are musicians and she and her mother sing along with them in the Rogers Family group.

Karen began singing about the time she began toting a coloring book and crayons in one arm and a rag-doll in the other. Crocheting was not many moons afterward. She watched her Aunt Joyce everyday work with bright colored balls of yarn and a strange looking needle. Her aunt explained that she was crocheting.

"Will you teach me?" Karen asked.

It took only a couple of days to learn the basic stitches of crochet. Joyce had awakened a sleeping giant and Karen's love for the art began. Each year she learned new and different stitches and grew more confident with each project she completed.

"My brothers would make fun of me when I sat for hours crocheting," Karen says. "They would call me 'Granny.'"

Karen enjoys many other artistic talents such as sewing, quilting, interior design, cake decorating, catering, and gardening. Her dearest is crocheting. As soon as she finishes one project she fills her basket with yarn for the next. "Shopping at the Hobby Lobby, shuffling through the yarn bins preparing for my next project is one of the fun things I do. There's nothing like it," Karen says.

Karen has received the Judges Choice award at the Mountain State Fair in Arden North Carolina for her afghan design and 1st place ribbon the following year. She took a 1st place ribbon for her afghan design and 2nd place ribbons for quilts designed two years in a row at Stecoah Valley Fair in Graham County North Carolina.

Karen is excited about her first exhibit and thanks One Dozen Who Care for the opportunity to participate in Art Friday.

Pottery exhibit by Malti Turnbull to showcase talent

"From the moment that I touched clay, I was lost to this most primal substance; the way it felt in my hands, the vessels and images it allowed me to create, and the way it transformed through the different processes has kept me engaged for many years now. I have been fortunate to work in clay for over twenty years yet crafting a vessel is always an exciting and absorbing experience for me. I have also felt a closeness to the Earth and I realized that working with clay nurtured and strengthened this connection.

My work is greatly influenced by my life in Kenya where I was fortunate to see wildlife in its natural surroundings. Whether I am making a vessel or a sculpture, these animals emerge in some shape or another. The reference to rhino horns, the massive bodies, bone structures, and exquisite skin markings of the elephants, zebras, and giraffes are unmistakably present in my works.

It is my hope that my artworks will evoke in the reader a memory of that personal connection with the Earth, a connection which attempts to emerge every time they are captivated by simple things in nature such as the song of a song bird or the beauty of a butterfly and that the conviction to protect the source of life will strengthen." -Malti Turnbull-

Please come meet these local artists and view their talents! Call 828-321-2273 for information. Light refreshments will be served.
