Bertha H. Carringer

Bertha H. Carringer, 100, of Brasstown died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 at her residence. A native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late Bert N. and Laura Standridge Hogan and the wife of the late Luther Carringer, who died Sept. 6, 1954. She was a retired elementary school teacher having taught for over 25 years in the Cherokee County School System. Bertha was the oldest member of the Little Brasstown Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and worked in Vacation Bible School. For many years, she was a member of the Martins Creek Homemaker's Club. She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother.

She was also preceded in death by five brothers, three sisters, and a granddaughter, Crystal Davis.

Surviving are three sons, Jim Carringer and wife, Janice, Billy Carringer and wife, Doris, and Hugh Carringer and wife, Joann all of Brasstown; six grandchildren, James Scott Carringer, Kimberly C. Lewis, Lynn C. Taylor, Kent B. Carringer, Holly C. Gutierrez, and Greta Carringer; 15 great grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Helen Ashe.

Funeral services were held at 7:30 PM Saturday, Sept. 27 in the Little Brasstown Baptist Church with the Revs. Aud Brown and Fred Lunsford officiating. Interment was at 1:30 PM Sunday, Sept. 28 in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Cook, Roy and Edmond Hogan, Ray Gutierrez, Jeff Taylor, and Mike Lewis.

The family received friends from 6-7:15 Saturday evening at the Little Brasstown Baptist Church prior to the services.

The family requests memorials be made in memory of Bertha H. Carringer to the NC Baptist Children's Home, PO Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361.
