Christine Penland

Christine Penland, 87, of Brasstown died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 in a Murphy medical center. A native and lifetime resident of Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Thomas and Hattie Elizabeth Hampton Hyatt and the wife of the late Hollis Penland, who died July 21, 1974.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church. She was an avid gardner and a loving mother, mother-in-law, sister, and friend.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Penland Sandidge and husband, John of Murphy; a son, Hollis "Keith" Penland and wife, Lisa of Hiawassee, GA; two brothers, John T. Hyatt and wife, Dewell of Candler, NC and Glenn A. Hyatt of Brasstown; and six nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Sunday, Sept. 28 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Alan Wildsmith officiating. Interment was at 10:00 AM Monday, Sept. 29 in the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred and Steve Martin, Arvil Cook, John Payne, Harold Coleman, and Clark Anderson.

The family received friends from 2-3:45 Sunday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.

The family requests memorials be made in memory of Christine Penland to the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church, 800 Settawig Road, Brasstown, NC 28902.

Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy in charge of all arrangements.
